Humanistic Play Therapy

Humanistic Play Therapy is a one-on-one therapeutic approach that helps children express themselves, make sense of big feelings, and learn new coping strategies for everyday life.

Sessions typically take place once a week in a specially designed playroom filled with a variety of toys, arts and crafts, instruments, books, dress-up costumes, and other materials. These resources are carefully selected to meet the unique needs of each child and family, providing ample opportunities for expression and exploration through play.

In Humanistic Play Therapy, the child takes the lead in deciding what and how they want to play, with the trained Play Therapist guiding and supporting them. This child-led approach empowers children to set the pace of their own therapeutic journey, leading to meaningful and lasting change.

Sessions Time Frame
Play Therapy sessions typically last 50 minutes and are most effective when held at the same time each week. However, if a different arrangement would better suit your child’s needs, your Play Therapist will discuss this with you.

The number of sessions required varies for each child. Some may benefit from short-term intervention (12-24 sessions) to work through challenging feelings and experiences, while others, particularly those facing more complex or ongoing issues, may require longer-term support.

Parents Involvement
Play Therapists maintain regular communication with parents and caregivers through feedback sessions every 4-6 weeks. These sessions are a key part of the Humanistic Play Therapy process, providing an opportunity for parents to ask questions about their child's progress and share updates on how their child is doing at home, school, or kindergarten. The Play Therapist may also suggest additional supports for the child and family during these meetings.

If necessary, parents and caregivers can contact their child’s Play Therapist by phone or email between feedback sessions.
